In-situ MEMS Testing
نویسندگان
چکیده
Related to the dramatically smaller volume of microelectromecanical systems (MEMS), new methods in testing and qualification are needed. On single crystal silicon (SCSi) based devices, stress and loading in operation introduces defects during the MEMS life time and increases the risk of failure. Reliability studies on potential failure sources have an impact on MEMS design and are essential to assure the long term functioning of the device. In this paper, mechanical tests such as tensile tests on SiSC beams are discussed to assess the resistance of SCSi structures upon loading. Defects introduced by DRIE, thermal annealing, dicing and bonding influence the crystalline perfection and have a direct impact on the mechanical properties of MEMS and on their aging behavior. Strain, defects and deformations are analyzed using High Resolution X-ray Diffraction Methods (HRXRD). Supporting simulations are done by Finite Element Method (FEM).

Quantitative in situ TEM tensile fatigue testing on nanocrystalline metallic ultrathin films.
A unique technique to perform quantitative in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) fatigue testing on ultrathin films and nanomaterials is demonstrated. The technique relies on a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device to actuate a nanospecimen and measure its mechanical response. Compared to previously demonstrated MEMS-based in situ TEM techniques, the technique takes advantage of ...
متن کاملDouble-tilt in situ TEM holder with multiple electrical contacts and its application in MEMS-based mechanical testing of nanomaterials.
MEMS and other lab-on-a-chip systems are emerging as attractive alternatives to carry out experiments in situ the electron microscope. However, several electrical connections are usually required for operating these setups. Such connectivity is challenging inside the limited space of the TEM side-entry holder. Here, we design, implement and demonstrate a double-tilt TEM holder with capabilities...
متن کاملHigh-cycle Life Testing of Rf Mems Switches (preprint)
RF MEMS capacitive switches capable of orderof-magnitude impedance changes have demonstrated operating lifetimes exceeding 100 billion switching cycles without failure. In situ monitoring of switch characteristics demonstrates no significant degradation in performance and quantifies the charging properties of the switch silicon dioxide film. This demonstration leads credence to the mechanical r...
متن کاملA Microelectromechanical System for Nano-Scale Testing of One Dimensional Nanostructures
In situ electron microscopy tensile tests of nanowires and carbon nanotubes performed using a MEMS-based material testing system are reported. The development of the material testing system (previously reported elsewhere23–26) is briefly reviewed. This system, consisting of a surface micromachined actuator and load sensor, makes possible continuous observation of specimen deformation and failur...
متن کاملUnderstanding and Improving Longevity in RF MEMS Capacitive Switches
This paper discusses issues relating to the reliability and methods for employing high-cycle life testing in capacitive RF MEMS switches. In order to investigate dielectric charging, transient current spectroscopy is used to characterize and model the ingress and egress of charges within the switch insulating layer providing an efficient, powerful tool to investigate various insulating material...
